Interviews in the Age of AI

Hey Reader! πŸ‘‹

I took a frontend interview earlier today.

I was testing for two things: knowledge depth and AI adaptability.

The interviewee was quite comfortable with their toolbelt.

In 30 minutes, they were able to understand the requirement and build a screen with an API integration.

The things that stood out were:

  1. Humility: They accepted feedback at each stage and took the hint to change directions quickly. In a team, how well you work with other people matters.
  2. They used AI effectively to generate 5 variations of the UI, took in good parts of each, and landed on a final version. Pretty good in a tight timeframe!

I also asked them to make changes directly in the codebase without AI and I could see the comfort with which they were able to make changes without getting overwhelmed.

I passed them for a junior developer instead of a mid-level dev. I wanted to push for the latter but I couldn't see the product eye in their decisions. Also, they were not able to push AI back on anything - just took in every suggestion AI made. As you grow, you need to be one step ahead of AI - you do the thinking, let AI handle code.

In other news, I'm excited to see Project Hail Mary! I read the book 5 years back and loved it. Andy tickles my nerdy bones. See you next week!

Hey Reader! πŸ‘‹ I had my 2nd Triple Crown Day today! https://swapnilagarwal.com/posts/triple-crown-day Continuing my observations from the career clarity calls I'm doing: Meet M. From a recruiter perspective, the question in this case becomes this: How can you showcase you’re AI-native so that in a room of 10 candidates,...

Hey Reader! πŸ‘‹ It was quite a stressful week. A bunch of last-minute travel involved. Back to scheduled programming from today! If you've applied for a career clarity call recently, I'll reach out to you this week! This happened. 2+ years of experience. Got rejected in 4th round. Cultural. Companies look for intent.
