Show High Intent When Interviewing For Experienced Roles

Hey Reader! πŸ‘‹

It was quite a stressful week. A bunch of last-minute travel involved. Back to scheduled programming from today! If you've applied for a career clarity call recently, I'll reach out to you this week!

This happened.

2+ years of experience.

Got rejected in 4th round. Cultural.

Companies look for intent.

A slight signal of you being not excited about the opportunity might indicate you won't be there in the long term. This is important especially when a company is taking a bet on you, i.e. hiring you out of a career break, your previous experiences have been all remote and this is wfo or vice versa, your technical interviews were borderline, etc.

From a company's POV, retention matters more than joining. Because if you leave early, the time and money invested is gone and they have to start over (shortlisting, interviewing, ramping up, etc.). There are 2 ways of handling this:

  1. Be so good that they can't ignore you. Impress them with your technical skills. Do a lot of mocks with your friends before. Book a few with seniors. Know in and out of the most common interview questions and their follow-ups.
  2. Show up in an interview with proof of work around that company itself! Since you cannot realistically do this well for a lot of companies (time is limited), it shows you're really excited about that company rather than treating it as an option. No company wants to be your second choice.

What have been your observations while interviewing for experienced roles? Let me know by replying to this email.

From a recruiter perspective, the question in this case becomes this: How can you showcase you’re AI-native so that in a room of 10 candidates,...

Hey Reader! πŸ‘‹ I'm hosting a webinar + AMA tonight: https://lu.ma/vyson Continuing my observations from the career clarity calls I'm doing: Meet B. B started as a frontend intern and moved to a fullstack role in the same company along the way. The core problem was that he never built depth in one space. I realised that because I never built strong expertise in any one thing, I'm stuck right now and cannot quickly transition to a different company. A lot of my friends stuck with one thing and...
